From Proto-Tai *k.lajᴬ (“far”). Cognate with Thai ไกล (glai), Lao ໄກ (kai), Lü ᦺᦂ (k̇ay), Shan ၵႆ (kǎi), Tai Nüa ᥐᥭᥴ (káy), Ahom 𑜀𑜩 (kay), Zhuang gyae.
