Etymology

[edit]

The second element of the compound is teikn (sign). The first half of the compound probably derives from Proto-Germanic *erknaz, which relates it to Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌺𐌽𐍃 (airkns) and Middle High German erchan. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
