Etymology

Borrowing from a Semitic language. Compare Biblical Hebrew אַבִּיר (ʾabbī́r, “mighty, valiant”) (often used of stallions), or perhaps Ugaritic 𐎛𐎁𐎗 (ỉbr, “bull”) (= Arabic بَعِير (baʕīr)).
