Turkish

Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish كوچوك (küçük, small, little), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (kiçük, small, little), from Proto-Turkic *kičük, *kičüg (small, little). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰚𐰃𐰲𐰏 (kičig), Karakhanid [script needed] (kičüg). According to Clauson it is hard to explain the final /k/ and rounded vowels in modern languages like Turkish and they should be regarded as borrowings from Persian کوچک (kūčak, small). However this is unlikely and can not be justified solely based on this assumption due to forms like küçü-l- (to become small), diminutive form küçü-cük and preservation of /ç/ despite the long vowel Persian form has.
