From Proto-Turkic *kɨĺ (winter). Cognate with Tatar кыш (qış), Kyrgyz кыш (kış), Kumyk къыш (qış), Tuvan кыш (kış), Uzbek qish, Turkmen gyş, Yakut кыһын (kıhın), Kazakh қыс (qıs), etc.
