From Old Turkic kıl, from Proto-Turkic *Kɨl(k) (hair), from Proto-Altaic *k`íla (*k`íla) ("hair") (see website starling.rinet.ru for more etymological information). Cognates with Proto-Japanese *kái (descended to Modern Japanese (ke) ("fur, hair")).
