[edit]From Ottoman Turkish قلج (kılıc), from Proto-Turkic *kïlï̄č (“sword”).
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (qïlïč, “sword”); Kazakh қылыш (qylyş, “sword”), Shor қылыш (qïlïš, “sword”), Yakut кылыс (kılıs, “combat knife; sabre”), etc.
