Finnish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From a descendant of Proto-Germanic *skaidaz; compare Swedish skede (span of time). No cognates are found in other Baltic-Finnic languages. The original meaning "forest clearing, mound at swamp; treeless area" can still be seen in the term keidassuo. The sense of "oasis" is an academic adaptation from the late 19th century.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈkei̯dɑs/, [ˈke̞i̯dɑs̠]
