Etymology

At first in soldiers’ slang among the Armée d’Afrique. From common Maghrebi Arabic, including Algerian Arabic كيف كيف (kīf kīf, the same; in the same way), from كيف (kīf, how; like), itself from Arabic كَيْفَ (kayfa).
