The first element is derived from king and the second from rik (kingdom, realm), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *rīkiją (kingdom, realm), cf. Old Norse ríki, Old English rīce. Compare also Dutch koninkrijk, German Königreich, Danish kongerige.
