From Middle Dutch koninkrike, from Old Dutch *kuningrīki, from Proto-West Germanic *kuningarīkī, from Proto-Germanic *kuningarīkiją. Equivalent to koning +‎ rijk. Compare German Königreich, Danish kongerige.
