Swedish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

kontant (cash) +‎ kassa (cash register)

Noun[edit]

kontantkassa c

  1. (retail) cash register that has the ability to handle cash
    • 2020, Jan Stenqvist, “Simhallen upphör med kontanter [The swimming pool ends with cash]”, in Barometern Oskarshamns-Tidningen[1]:
Att ha en kontantkassa är en riskfaktor, och den risken vill vi inte utsätta oss för [...]
Having a cash register with cash is a risk factor, and we don't want to expose ourselves to that risk [...]

Usage notes[edit]

This does not exclude the possibility for the cash register to handle other forms of payment, such as debit or credit card, it merely states the possibility to pay with cash. The word is mainly used in a professional setting when the distinction from cash-free registers, kortkassa, needs to be made. In everyday usage, when a distinction is not required, the word kassa will most often suffice.
