From Proto-Finnic *kupla (bubble), from Proto-Finno-Ugric *kupla. Cognates include Finnish kupla (bubble), Ingrian kupla (heap; crest), Karelian kubla (debris on the water), Livvi kublu (swamp), Ludian kubl (swim bladder); Southern Sami gåbloe (lung), Inari Sami koble (perch roe), Skolt Sami kåbllad (to float), Eastern Mari кувыл (kuvyl, rain bubbles on water) and Northern Mansi [script needed] (χɨwl-, to swim / row downstream). Possibly also Eastern Khanty комԓәӈ (komłəṇ, bladder; blister) and Hungarian hólyag (bladder; blister; bubble).
