From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kuʀapu (the sea perch, giant rock cod, giant grouper, Epinephelus spp.). Compare Malay kerapu, Indonesian kerapu, Tausug kulapu, Pangutaran Sama kulapu, Bikol Central pugapo, Tagalog kulapo, Tiruray kurafu, Ivatan korapo, Yami kozapo, Palauan ksaw and Sundanese kurapu.
