German Quarz, from Middle High German twarc, probably from a West Slavic language (compare Czech tvrdý (hard), Polish twardy (hard), Russian твёрдый (tvjórdyj, hard)), from Old Church Slavonic тврьдъ (tvrĭdŭ, firm), from Proto-Slavic *tvьrdъ.
