Old Norse

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Of uncertain origin: Pokorny derives it from Proto-Indo-European *kot- (dwelling space), comparing words such as Proto-Germanic *kutą (shed, hut, stall), Old English heaþor (enclosure, jail), Ancient Greek κοτύλη (kotúlē, cup, pint); however, the relation and origin of these words is unclear. Also compare the cognates listed at Proto-Slavic *kotьcь (cottage, paddock).
