A formation from lëndë, with -inë suffix, from Proto-Albanian *linden, from Proto-Indo-European *lendʰ- 'land, heath'. Compare Old Prussian lindan ‎(valley), Old Welsh itḫlann ‎(area), Old Irish lann ‎(heath), Old English land, Old Church Slavonic lędо 'heath, wasteland'.
