Etymology

From the older form lăcrăma, from Latin lacrimāre, present active infinitive of lacrimō. Most of the Romance cognates seem to have developed with the infix *-idiō, *-idiāre, as with conjugated forms of the Romanian: compare Aromanian lãcãrmedz, lãcãrmari, Italian lacrimare, dialectal variant lacrimeggiare, Catalan llagrimejar, Occitan lagremejar, Portuguese lacrimejar, Spanish lagrimar, lagrimear, French larmoyer.
