Inherited from Proto-Iranian *Hraxšakarah, a compound of *Hráxšati (“to protect, guard”) + *karah (“doer”), of which the former element is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hrákšati (“to protect”).[1] Compare Sanskrit रक्षति (rakṣati).
