From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin lāicus (lay, layman, laic), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek λαϊκός (laïkós, of the people), from λαός (laós, the people). Doublet of lai (lay, not belonging to the clergy).
