From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin lāicus (“lay, layman, laic”), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek λαϊκός (laïkós, “of the people”), from λαός (laós, “the people”). Doublet of lai (“lay, not belonging to the clergy”).
