From Proto-Baltic *lapē (compare Old Prussian lape, Latvian lapsa), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wl(o)p ~ *h₂ulp ‘(red) fox’ (compare Breton louarn, Ancient Greek ἀλώπηξ (alṓpēx), Armenian աղվես (ałves), Persian روباه (rubâh)).
