Etymology

[edit]

By surface analysis, leden +‎ -áček (Russian леди́нник (ledínnik)). Compare parallel Danish isfugl, Dutch ijsvogel, German Eisvogel (calqued into Hungarian jégmadár), Old English īsearn (analyzable as akin to ice, see, however Eisvogel for another conjecture).

Also compare typologically Polish zimorodek, Russian зиморо́док (zimoródok), akin to зима́ (zimá).
