From Proto-Germanic *langatīnaz (lengthening, spring), from *langaz (long) + *tīnaz (day). Akin to Old Saxon lentin, Old Dutch lentin (Dutch lente), Old High German lengizen, lenzin (German Lenz). Compare also Gothic 𐍃𐌹𐌽𐍄𐌴𐌹𐌽𐍃 (sinteins, daily).
