Etymology

Singularized plural of earlier *leg, *lig. Either from Latin lēx, lēgem (law), from Proto-Indo-European *leǵ- (to collect, to speak), or from the same root of Lithuanian lygùs (equal) and Old Prussian līgan (court), as substantiated by ligje (mourning, dirge).
