[edit]Etymology
[edit]Ultimately from Vulgar Latin *linguāticum, derived from Latin lingua. Its form precludes inheritance from that source (the ending -adi would have been expected otherwise) and presupposes a borrowing from Occitan lenguatge (possibly via Italian) or Old French language.
