From Proto-Nuristani *dijū́ (whence Ashkun žū́, Kamkata-viri díć, díz), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́iȷ́ʰwáH (whence Sanskrit जिह्वा (jihvā́), Avestan 𐬵𐬌𐬰𐬎𐬎𐬁 (hizuuā), Persian زبان (zabân)), from Proto-Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s (whence Latin lingua, Russian язы́к (jazýk), English tongue).
