From Proto-Germanic *smakōną, *smakōjaną, *smakkijaną. Compare German schmecken. Cognate to Finnish maistaa. Doublet of mekkima.

Mostly conjugated like maitsema, with exeptions like the past active participle and some forms of the imperative mood, as well as some passive forms. To avoid confusion, conjugate the verb entirely like maitsema.
