From Proto-Indo-European *mn̥tós (hand). Cognate to Ancient Greek μάρη (márē, hand), Latin manus (hand), Gothic manwus (willing, ready), Old Norse mund (hand). Alternatively, a Romance *manctus based on Latin mancus "maimed, infirm", mirroring the development of Italian manca "left hand". Cf Albanian mëngjër "left" < Romance *mancinus. [2][3]
