[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *mn̥tós (“hand”). Cognate to Ancient Greek μάρη (márē, “hand”), Latin manus (“hand”), Gothic manwus (“willing, ready”), Old Norse mund (“hand”). Alternatively, a Romance *manctus based on Latin mancus "maimed, infirm", mirroring the development of Italian manca "left hand". Cf Albanian mëngjër "left" < Romance *mancinus. [2][3]
