Etymology

From a crossing of Latin mentiō, mentiōnem with mentīri, probably through a Vulgar Latin *mentionia, or from Late Latin mentiō (lie), probably from a hypothetical *mentītiō from mentītus, past participle of mentior (I lie, deceive; I pretend, feign). Compare Italian menzogna, Old French mensoigne.
