From Proto-Yupik-Sirenik *maqaq- base, “heat”

Verb

maqarluni (root maqar-)

1. (intransitive) be hot, warm

   Aluuwimi unuarpak maqarluni macartuq.

   This morning it is warm and sunny on the Alaska Peninsula.

Usage notes

The verb maqarluni is used to describe weather conditions as in Maqartuq Kicarwigmi nutaan (Right now it’s hot in Anchorage) and used to describe when someone is feeling hot as in Lucy angli qecengellria maqarluni (Lucy ran a long way so she’s hot). Generally the verb uqnarluni is by contrast used to described the temperature of things as in Kaminaq uqnartuq (The heater is hot).
