    From Proto-Algonquian *maškihkyiwi (grass, herb, medicine). Cognate with Menominee maskīhkiw (medicine), Fox mashishki (herb), Cree ᒪᐢᑭᐦᑭᕀ (maskihkiy, herb, medicine).
