[edit]From Proto-Oceanic *mate-an (compare Mota matea) or *mate-aŋa (compare Niuean mateaga), from *mate (“to die”) + *-an, *-aŋa (“nominalizing suffix”). Equivalent to mate (“to die”) + -anga (“nominalizing suffix”).
