maydanoz
Turkish
Etymology
From Ottoman Turkish معدنوز (maydanoz), an already medieval borrowing from Arabic مَعْدُونِس (maʕdūnis), from Ancient Greek μακεδονήσιον (makedonḗsion, “Macedonian, Macedonian herb”). In dialects in the southeast with continuous influence of Arabic, also bahteniz, bahdeniz and the like forms reborrowed from the Arabic variant بَقْدُونِس (baqdūnis) have gained currency.
