Etymology
[edit]Perhaps from Thracian *μαζελα (*mazela),[1] eventually from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ǵʰ-elo (“small bean”). Due to phonetic difficulties regarding [u], less likely from Proto-Albanian *mādzula, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ǵʰ-ulo (“small bean”). Compare Aromanian madzãri (“peas”); see also the related Albanian modhull (“vetchling, yellow vetchling, vetch”), as well as Sanskrit माष (māṣa, “Old World bean”).
