Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Latin matia, probably remade from the plural of an original singular form *mață. Compare Aromanian mats, matsã, Megleno-Romanian matsi. Cf. also Neapolitan matsse, Sardinian matza (belly), macia, massa, matta.
