From Late Latin, Vulgar Latin *mustacea, feminine of *mustaceum, ultimately from Ancient Greek μύσταξ ‎(mústax, upper lip, mustache). Compare Aromanian mustatsã, Italian mostaccio, Neapolitan mustaccio, Sicilian mustazzu, Spanish mostacho, French moustache.
