[edit]From Ottoman Turkish متصرف (mutasarrıf, “governor of a sanjak”), from Arabic مُتَصَرِّف (mutaṣarrif, “autonomous one, governor of a province”), from تَصَرَّفَ (taṣarrafa, “to act, to act independently”).
