Etymology[edit]

From older *niust, whence also Central Franconian nühs, neihst, and possibly (but uncertainly) East Central German nischt. Of somewhat unstraightforward origin, but eventually probably from Old High German niowiht, whence also net (not) and German nicht, nichts.
