From Middle Low German nōttorft, from Old Saxon nōdthurft, from nōd (need) +‎ thurft (need). Compare Gothic 𐌽𐌰𐌿𐌳𐌹𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍆𐍄𐍃 (naudiþaurfts), German Notdurft, Dutch nooddruft, and (from Low German) Swedish nödtorft.
