Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from a Vulgar Latin *niglīna < *nigellīna, from Late Latin nigella, from Latin nigellus (compare French nielle), or from a root *nigrīna, ultimately from niger. Alternatively, possibly related to năgară and neg.
