From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Japanese ニューハーフ (nyūhāfu, new half), from ハーフ (hāfu, half; person of mixed Japanese and other ancestry), suggesting that trans women are a new kind of "half" (namely half-male and half-female). ニューハーフ is wasei eigo, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] English.
