Etymology
From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Albanian *(a)ngul, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *ank (“to bend, bow, *flex; wangle; turn; curve, snake coil, anchor”). Compare Latin ungula (“a hoof, claw, talon”), Old High German angul (“fish hook, sting”), Tocharian B añcöl (“bow, arch, curve”), Old Norse Ǫngull (“angle, bay”). Related to ngel. Alternatively from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Albanian * ̊gull-, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *gwelH- (“to prick”). Cognate to Lithuanian gélti (“to prick”), gìlti (“to get pained, ache”). A formation with the prefix (a)n-.
