From Proto-Germanic *nikwus, *nikwis, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *neygʷ- (to wash). Cognate with Middle Dutch necker (Dutch nikker (demon)), Old High German nicchus (German Nix (water sprite)), Old Norse nykr (Faroese nykur, Swedish näck).
