Etymology[edit]

Possibly a borrowing from Sami, cf. Proto-Samic *noarvē (seal) (whence Northern Sami noarvi). Cognate with Karelian ńorppa, Ludian ńorp. Russian нерпа (nerpa, seal of the genus "Pusa") is a borrowing from Finnic.
