Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Originally a synonym (or rather a dialectal variant) of mursu (“walrus”) (see it for more).[1] Before detailed information about the elephant spread to Finland, it was only known as a big, thick-skinned animal with handsome tusks, hence the initial confusion. The meanings diverged around 18th century.
