Borrowed from Late Latin nosocomīum, from Ancient Greek νοσοκομείον (nosokomeíon, “hospital”), from νόσος (nósos, “disease, illness”) + κομέω (koméō, “to take care of”). Compare Italian nosocomio and Spanish nosocomio.
