Borrowed from Late Latin nosocomīum, from Ancient Greek νοσοκομείον (nosokomeíon, hospital), from νόσος (nósos, disease, illness) + κομέω (koméō, to take care of). Compare Italian nosocomio and Spanish nosocomio.
