English

Prepositional phrase

on one hand

  1. Alternative form of on the one hand

Usage notes

This form of the idiomatic expression is not even mentioned in many dictionaries and is specifically proscribed in others (e.g. Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English). This is perhaps because leaving out the definite article especially elsewhere than at the beginning of a sentence could often be considered incorrect. E.g. leaving it out could perhaps be misunderstood, at least initially, as reference to a physical hand instead of the idiomatic use, even though the reader very quickly realizes in the following example that this wouldn't be logical: a conflict between their rationally held views on the one hand and their emotions and desires on the other.
