Etymology

From a base *shtyj (“to spit”), from Proto-Albanian *śtūi̯a/i- (“to spit”), from Proto-Indo-European *spi̯eu̯H- (“to spit”). The initial pë- is either from për- (< PA *pra-), or from Proto-Albanian *apu- (“away”). Variants such as fshtyj use instead the Proto-Albanian prefix *u̯i-, and mështyn uses Proto-Albanian *əmbi- (“up”).[1]
