[edit]From either Proto-Sino-Tibetan or Proto-Lolo-Burmese. Cognate with Burmese ဖန် (hpan, “astringent”), Hani pail (“astringent”) and possibly Proto-Kuki-Chin *phak (“astringent”) and Drung paʔ. Compare Lhao Vo pin, Zaiwa bvan and Longchuan Achang pʰan⁵⁵.
