Latvian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From paš (a form of pats “self”) +‎ skaņa (sound). A calque of German Selbstlaut (vowel), it was, until the beginning of the 20th century, one of the competing variants of the term patskanis, coined by A. Kronvalds in the 1860s.[1]
